Federico Di Bisceglie succeeded in designing a membrane contactor, which was subsequently implemented into the gas bioreactor allowing to reach biomass of up to 10 g/L under autotrophy conditions in a reduced hydrogen atmosphere. Then isopropanol production was demonstrated in this membrane contactor bioreactor, allowing to produce up to 1.4 g/L isopropanol from CO2 under low H2 atmosphere. This study provides a proof of concept that molecules production from CO2/H2/O2 is possible in C. necator under low H2 atmosphere which rends the process much safer. He also worked on small scale design for aerobic autotrophic cultivation.
